Ben Franklin Club Calls for Impeachment of the President

The Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club has passed a strongly worded resolution expressing its full support for an unimpeded and in-depth impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump. Democratic District Leader Eric Dinowitz introduced the resolution, which passed unanimously. Over the summer District Leader Dinowitz became the first Bronx Democratic District Leader to call for an official impeachment inquiry of Trump.

“I truly believe that the future of our democracy is at stake. That is why I called for the President’s impeachment this summer. There are many acts by this president that I believe warrant impeachment, but his latest outrage has brought the issue to a head. I applaud Congressman Eliot Engel and Congressman Adriano Espaillat for their leadership on this issue.

“While political clubs don’t cast a vote on impeachment, it is important that we speak out loudly and clearly on this and that we declare our support for the courageous stand of our Congress Members. Regardless of how this is resolved, we must all unite as Democrats to defeat the Republicans and their regressive policies in 2020,” stated Dinowitz.

“Though there is zero doubt that President Trump has engaged in numerous impeachable offenses over the course of his presidency, I had previously questioned the efficacy of moving forward with a full inquiry. However, this attempt to brazenly manipulate a foreign leader into a conspiracy to defame a political opponent is a major attack on our constitution. I’m proud that my fellow members unanimously passed the resolution supporting the inquiry that is now underway,” said Michael Heller, Club President.

The following is the resolution:

Whereas, the Mueller Report documented instances where, in pursuit of his own political ambitions, President Donald Trump has committed acts flagrantly obstructing justice, which qualify as high crimes and misdemeanors, and

Whereas, Donald Trump has apparently violated his oath of office by grossly abusing his role as commander in chief of the armed forces by seeking to have a foreign government act in a manner to undermine the candidacy of a domestic political competitor, and

Whereas, the club’s 81st assembly district is represented in the House of Representatives by two Members of Congress, Eliot Engel, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Adriano Espaillat, a member of that committee, who will play important roles in the impeachment inquiry announced yesterday by Speaker Nancy Pelosi,

Therefore, the Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club expresses its full support for an unimpeded and in-depth impeachment inquiry that will restore constitutional integrity and the rule of law by demonstrating that no one, including the president of the United States, is above the law, or immune from removal from office.
